Implants

What Is a Dental Implant Treatment?

A dental implant is a titanium post (like a tooth root) that is surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath the gum line in order to provide a functional and esthetic replacement for missing teeth.

Titanium is a material of choice in making dental implants since it does not react with body tissues and is particularly strong. Implants can be placed in the sockets of previously lost teeth or right away after tooth extraction on the condition that there is no serious infection involved.

Assuming that the jawbone is strong enough and suitable, dental implants to support a permanent or removable prosthesis can be placed in it with a simple operation. If the amount and density of the bone are not on the desired level, treatments supporting the bone development may be applied before the implant treatment.

Dental Implant Prices

The prices of dental implants in Trabzon are, as it happens in other regions of Black Sea, based on the price list published by Turkish Association of Dentistry similarly to clinics in Istanbul, Ankara or Izmir. It is common in Turkey to provide an instalment plan for dental implants since they are considered a long-lasting treatment.

Dental Implants FAQ

Is it necessary to replace every lost tooth with an implant?
If there is enough of strong bone, doctors prefer to place one implant for every missing tooth. However, in some situations, two implants may be positioned in a certain distance to support a bridge dental prosthesis. The number of implants to be placed may be determined only after clinical and radiographic examination by a specialist.
Can patients with a removable prosthesis benefit from it?
Nowadays, even patients without teeth may be saved with implants from removable prosthesis if they have enough bone tissue or after a bone growth stimulation. Especially using a removable prosthesis for toothless lower jaw is quite hard since patients experience problems caused on the inside by constantly moving tongue and on the outside by cheeks and lips during speaking and eating. Troubles caused by lower jaw prosthesis which cannot remain in its place and often dents due to tongue and cheek movements and chewing can be eliminated with dental implants.

Additionally, nausea and other issues caused by palate-closing design aiming at ensuring that the total upper jaw dental prosthesis remains at its place are also eliminated with this treatment. In such a situation, a permanent implant or fixed implant prosthesis may be planted. Both of these solutions guarantee that nuisances such as dislocation and nausea will disappear.
What are the advantages of implants?
Recreating the lost tooth with an implant is important for the surrounding teeth as well as for the chewing process being healthy and functioning properly. Creating a new tooth in its natural form together with its esthetic and chewing function we can prevent other teeth from sliding towards the hole, not to mention other tooth deformities. Moreover, the bone loss occurring in the hole created by the tooth removal is hindered by dental implant treatment.
What are the advantages of the implant process compared to the bridge prosthesis?
In patients with one or more missing teeth who decide for a classical bridge prosthesis, teeth surrounding the place of the missing teeth are often removed, reduced and experience a material loss. However, in dental implant procedure, no such damage is inflicted – the tooth loss is eliminated by firstly placing the implant imitating the root and then installing a crown.
Is it suitable for every patient?
Apart from rare exceptions, dental implant treatment can be successfully applied to anybody. It can be conducted on anybody with a bone of sufficient thickness, highness, and quality and who underwent a systematic health evaluation.

The presence of adequate bone tissue depends on a number of factors. Some people may have naturally a thin/thick or weak/strong bone tissue. Others may have issues with bone erosion caused by teeth and gum inflammation. Therefore, it is better to remove the tooth as soon as such a decision about the removal is made. In some cases, it is possible to wait with positioning the implant after the teeth removal, while in others, placing the implant may be conducted right away in the same session.
In what patients it may be risky to conduct an implant procedure?
• People suffering from diabetes and chronic cardiovascular diseases which affect the recovery
• Young patients whose bones aren’t fully developed
• Pregnant women
• Heavy smokers (smoking suppresses the recovery process and, therefore, may decrease the chance for successful implant procedure)
• Alcoholics and drug addicts
• People who were given a high dose of radiotherapy to the head or neck
• People with chronic health issues such as high blood pressure, connective tissue diseases, haemophilia, and significant immunodeficiency disorders
• People using corticosteroids and medicines suppressing the immune system
In these groups of patients, it is dangerous to conduct the dental implant treatment and it may unsuccessfully end. However, it depends on the degree to which one’s disease has an effect on overall health and the seriousness of the particular case – after a thorough examination it may be deemed possible. Such a decision belongs to the doctor after a systematic consultation.
Is it possible that the body will reject the implants?
It is not possible that the body will reject the implants. Implants do not interact with the body and do not have any known side effects and do not cause an allergic reaction. Still, dental implants may, as it was mentioned before, be not suitable for some of the patients.
If one has osteoporosis, do jawbones also experience a bone loss?
General osteoporosis and bone thinning in the jaw are two different health issues. Even if one has a high-degree osteoporosis in the body, the jawbone may be in a very good shape. Similarly, a person enjoying a general good bone health may experience a jawbone loss.
Are there any disadvantages of dental implants?
Due to implant materials being produced by the means of latest technology and imported from abroad, they are costlier than a classic prosthesis. As for another disadvantage, in order to install the prosthesis with an implant, one must wait for the implant to merge with the surrounding bone. As a result, this procedure usually lasts longer than its alternatives.
How is the implant treatment conducted, what processes does it include?
Nowadays, the dental implant procedure is very simple and painless. First of all, the area is anesthetised with a local anaesthesia. Later on, a socket is created in the bone in which the implant is to be positioned. After placing the implant, screws which are to stay on the implant throughout the recovery period are placed. Finally, the patient can wait for the recovery to pass.

In order for dental implants to remain intact against the external pressure caused by chewing, they need to merge with the surrounding jawbone. This process may take different amounts of time depending on the type of the operation as well as the health and age of the patient. In order to have the permanent prosthesis positioned, one needs to wait between 5 weeks to 3 months. As for implants placed in recreated bone parts after a treatment for bone thinness was conducted, the waiting period may become even longer. After this time, the measures are taken and the planned prosthesis is created.
How long does it last?
The most important factor determining the life cycle of an implant positioned in the patient’s mouth is their attention to daily dental care. As all the other patients, those with dental implants should definitely visit a dentist every 6 months and undergo tooth cleaning. Problems spotted during these visits may be dealt with in their early stages, therefore avoiding their development.
Is the brand important?
It is better to choose dental implants systems created by companies which put emphasis on R&D, have a long track of successes, have well-functioning technical support, and provide enough choices when it comes to the upper part of the prosthesis. However, the success of the implant procedure depends also on the patient’s potential for recovery, smoking, the state of one’s oral hygiene, the presence of systemic diseases which can affect the recovery process such as diabetes, and the surgical skills of the doctor.
Is it an expansive treatment?
99,9% pure titanium used in implants is a high-tech industrial material. Therefore, the opening price for this kind of procedure is quite high. Whether an implant is expensive or affordable depends on the brand and additional surgical materials used during the process.
